I think Selena Gomez (Justin's gf. Yes, I actually subscribe to People Magazine and, yes, I await my Friday mail delivery like Garfield waits for lasagna) is really cute. I never minded Ashley Tisdale, Demi Lovato or even Miley Cyrus. I just really hate Justin. I think his rise to fame and his UBER popularity has been completely blown out of proportion. I think he's going to be in therapy by the time he's 20 (a whole 3 year away!) or in rehab before that! It depends on my mood, my age, the time of day, how many cocktails I've had.... Today, it's my birthday. And I'm picking Phish. I started listening to Phish in high school as most of my friends did. The band is from just across the lake from my hometown of Plattsburgh, NY and I like to think that *we* knew about them before anyone else. Well, us and the entire student body of UVM... My dad told he met them once, before they were 'famous' at a philosophy convention since some (all?) of them were philosophy majors at UVM. That made my dad cool. For that day. Phish got me through high school. my early college years, the summers between college years....

I've fallen off the Phish wagon in the recent years. They announced their retirement, but like all the greats (and no-so-greats) they're back on tour this summer. I wish, in a way, I could go to a show. But, I don't know if I even would go if I could. I really like my memories of my 10+ shows, the friends I had at those shows, the drugs that were ingested, the memories created. I think I'll let those past experiences be just that - *past* experiences. I would hate for my 34 year old self try to live up to or change my 19 year old self's memories.

So, one of the first songs I was exposed to that was performed in my lovely hometown at one of Phish's first multi-day festivals, The Clifford Ball. I was in the crowd. Can you see me? Just kidding. I was there though.... I learned the beauty of the 'sleep' button on my alarm clock and, with the help of technology, have been able to fall asleep using headphones, tv's, iPods, etc to fall asleep. I love it. This song, the whole cd actually, is one of my favorite relaxing songs. I still have it on my iPod and listen to it while drinking wine in the bathtub. The cd was played out, literally, in my Sony Discman while at Camp Mason. It's like a fraternity or sorority - you're in it for life. And the people you meet there are in it too. And you talk about it all the time. Sometimes I performed with them, other times I was perfectly happy to sit and watch. This was one I helped to perform. Complete with awesome dance moves. Fit for the 9 year olds that agreed to use this song. Poor girls. And it became kind of my 'theme song' for that summer. You know the words too. Sing with me.....

30 day song challenge - Day 7

Day 7 – A song that reminds you of a certain event

This song reminds me of moving to Florida. I was finally living in a real 'city' with real radio stations and I heard this and thought I'd gone to heaven. I got a job the first few weeks living there as a bank teller and had to drive from New Tampa to Largo (about 60 minutes one way) for training. 5 days of sitting in rush hour traffic going to and coming from work. This song would play at least once on the radio. And if it didn't, I'd be disappointed. I started hearing about Ybor City and the dance clubs there. I eventually *went* to a few of the dance clubs and would have lived there if it hadn't been for jobs or college. Humph. And who better to remember than my friend Lisa. She and I were peas in a pod in high school. We each had other friends but it seemed we always found each other on the weekends, random Tuesday evenings, over the summer, between jobs, etc. We got into trouble together, doing practically nothing, and were model students together. We partied, drove drunk friends around, took offices in the French Club. Mostly though, we drove around. And around. And around. We both had access to a car, not *our own* car, but a car. And we drove. We figured out the school bus to trailer ratio in Peru, we had picnics on abandoned house's lawns, and we drove. For hours. And this song, on a mixed tape of mine, was played a LOT. We'd often drive around until this song was over. Like around the block. 5 minutes late for curfew was standard. And it was Lynyrd Skynyrd's fault. Hope you don't have anything to do for the next 10 minutes. Ha!

30 day song challenge - Day 4

Day 4 - A song that makes you sad

When I was 16, this song played continuously. This was my teen angst song. One, it has the work "fuck" in it a million times which pissed my parents off. Two, there's a love/hate thing going on. At the time, I was hoping that someday, some guy would love me so much that if/when we broke up, *he'd* play this song continuously wishing he hadn't fucked things up.

I'm on the 'wait list' for Anthony Kiedis' book where it supposedly says this is a song written after Sinead O'Connor blew him off after he professed his love to her. I love that crap. See? Even rock stars don't get everything they want.

Why does it make me sad? I picture my hormonal teenage self trying to figure things out and this song seemed to be the answer. This song?! I picture Kiedis (total crush then and now) sitting, writing, no - scribbling! - these song lyrics wondering how he could screw up so royally. It was used in a VW commercial in 2002 and I just chalked it up to a cool commercial. Years later I heard it used in a Jim Carey movie trailer (get to googling, geeks!) and started investigating. I found out about the band, the song and it actually became one of my very first true 'downloads'. This song is on EVERY running playlist I've ever made. I put it on repeat sometimes so it plays 3-4 times in a row. And I smile every. single. time. I know a LOT of people who do like it - the old country, the new stuff, the pop country, etc. Ever since Shania Twain and Miley's dad "crossed over" into the pop world with their feel-like-a-woman-achy-breaky-hearts, I've hated country. Fast forward to this generation of pop country stars. Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum and the country pop princess herself, Taylor Swift, have disturbed my top-40 listening pleasure lately. Not that there aren't terrible top-40 songs out there (just wait) or artists. And I know that everyone has their opinion, and this is just mine, but Taylor Swift drives me INSANE. I don't like her voice, I don't like her songs, I don't like her videos, I don't like her. I think she writes perfect songs for the 16 year old that she is. I think she has terrific people promoting the sh*t out of her and her music and - poof - a pop star. Her lyrics drive me crazy. Her teen love angst is overrated. Yes, everyone feels like that sometimes, but then I turned 18 and actually realized that *everyone* feels like that and I wasn't a leper and moved on. I turn the channel (tv or otherwise) when she's on. Bleck. There. Least favorite song? Of Taylor's there are so many to choose from.

Now, listen, before you start coming down on me, this is MY opinion. If you want to do this challenge and pick a Taylor Swift song for EVERY SINGLE CHOICE - have at it. I won't b*tch about your opinions. Don't b*tch about mine. Kthxbye.

30 day song challenge - Day 1

Ok. Fine. I'll just start. I have been thinking about it and actually putting MEGA pressure on myself to really do it EVERY DAY and to stick with it, blah, blah, blah. You know what? I'll start and if I skip a day, I'll catch up. And if I skip a few days, I'll catch up. I've got 2 young kids and a (probable) November half marathon to train for. Busy is an understatement....

Day 1: Your Favorite Song

This changes daily. Weekly. Monthly. Yearly. Maybe it would be too much. I've thought about it, but I've often thought I need a 'reason' to blog. People have goals, Julie & Julia, The Crockpot Lady, RLAM, etc. all have clear 'reasons' to blog. Me? I bitch, I moan, I sometimes quip... but a reason? Not usually.

Maybe I just found one. A 30 day blog challenge. I've come to realize that I am not going to be at my job, which I really like(d), for YEARS and that I've become a full time mom. I love being a mom, but I was a working mom for a long time. Now I'm a mom. And a mom. Oh - and a mom. That's it. That's how it felt/feels right now. So, I decided to use my time wisely and get back to the gym!

When I was home with Katie before I went back to work, I really enjoyed going to the gym. They have a great daycare/babysitting room that is included in our membership. The people that watch the kids are friendly and follow a pretty regular schedule so the same people are usually there around the same time. They'll give the babies bottles and keep the older kids occupied with activities, crafts and a cool playground. And if things get too crazy and staff member will come and find you to help alleviate any temper tantrums or the like. But, they don't come and get you unless they REALLY need you. The staff are very good at trying just about everything to settle a kiddo before they hunt you down. They know that this may be your only hour alone. They had to get me one time for Katie and it was because she had pinched her finger in a door and wouldn't calm down.

So, I signed Courtney up last week and headed to the gym today! I timed it out so she had just eaten and needed a nap. I packed her in the car where she promptly fell asleep. She stayed asleep the whole hour-and-fifteen-minutes I was there. Pretty nice.

I'm also happy about working toward my goal of a 5K race. I was doing a program called Couch to 5K before I was pregnant with Courtney. I had made it to week 5 when I saw the double pink line. I tried to keep up the program, but pregnancy kicks my butt physically and I opted for naps on the couch rather than the treadmill. Well. I'M BACK!! I'm using our old, 1st generation iPod and have downloaded all the podcasts that help me along. The program is a series of walking/running intervals that slowly condition your body. In about 9 weeks you'll have enough stamina to run a 5K in about 30 minutes. Not bad! So, today I completed the first day of week 1. I about died, but feel good and will do it again on Wednesday. I'm really hoping to keep going and run in a real, honest to goodness 5K sometime in the late summer or early fall. I want to pin a number on me and everything.

If your even remotely interested in running, you should try this program. I AM NOT a runner. and *I* can do this program. The workouts are short - between 25-45 minutes each - and the program is flexible. They recommend doing each workout 3 times a week with at least 1 day of rest in between. As the workouts get more challenging, I do them more than three times. The week 4 workout took me 6 times before I felt like I could go to week 5. No stress. Nobody's yelling at me because I need one more shot before I feel comfortable. It's on my iPod so nobody snickers "Ha ha! Look at her. She's doing the SAME workout 7 times." I like it!

So wish me luck. I'll try to post my progress as I move along and when I do my 5K I'll definitely post pictures and everything! Happy running!

Ok - an update

I really only have time for a quickie update. The sound of me typing ALWAYS wakes up Courtney, our now almost 8 week old daughter. Yep - she's wriggling already. Oh well.

I had forgotten how busy a newborn really keeps you! Yes, she eats, sleeps and poops. But then there are the times when she'll ONLY sleep on you, or the times when she has gas and is just super uncomfortable, or the times she just cries - for her own baby reasons. I'm amazed at how LITTLE gets done during a day. I have all the good intentions in the world - get the laundry folded, the dishes in the dishwasher, her baby book started. And then something comes up. Today? She slept on my chest for 2 hours. Who am I to move a soundly, happily, warmly sleeping baby girl? Ok - so I kind of enjoyed it. =) And the laundry will get done. I promise.

Then add to the mix an almost two-and-a-half year old. Katie is in go-go-toddler mode constantly. She loves to color, play stickers, play kitchen, play outside, play inside, play, play, play. If we could harness just a pinky-finger-full of her energy, we'd be set for DAYS! She's adjusting to Courtney pretty well here at home. School is a different story. She's still going to full-time daycare for convenience. She likes it there, her teachers really like her, and it gives me a a chance to deal with Courtney's baby schedule (or lack thereof) during the day. But, Katie's having difficulty with how much attention she's receiving at school. She's a favorite among most of the teachers and she's moving into a room that 'there are no favorites'. Well, that doesn't sit well with Miss K. So, she whines and cries a lot. I think I'll pull her out in another week or two so she'll be home full-time. Then I can give both girls divided attention. Yeah - great.

I figure we all have siblings. All parents with 2 or more children have gone through this. We can make it too. At least Katie's not causing physical harm to Courtney or Courtney's doesn't have colic or I didn't have triplets. We can do it!

So, there's an update. Nice, huh? Well, I'm still here and I took 10 minutes to update you. So, take what you can get! =)

Please - come back!

I've been gone for a while. She spent all day Saturday throwing up and then the 'fun' diapers began. 24 hours. Not a big deal. She's back to her silly self.

Last night I wasn't feeling so hot. I went to bed early. An hour later I was making the first of about 7 mad dashes for the toilet. Yes - I had caught my daughter's stomach bug. While I'm SURE I was NOT attractive while vomiting, I couldn't help but think how utterly comical it must look. I am now 37 weeks pregnant - about as big as you can get. The way our bathroom is set up, the toilet has it's own little room with a door. Read LITTLE ROOM. Put giganto prego lady on her knees with her face in the bowl and then ask that pregnant lady to get up when she's done. I'm surprised there aren't literal dents in the wall. I probably looked drunk. No. I wish.

Oh - and for those who have never been pregnant before, let me tell you a little secret. You don't have great control over your 'other end' functions this late in pregnancy. So, heave your guts out so hard that you think your eyeballs are about to pop out and see if you can 'hold it in'. Good luck. I'll be here when you get over the shame and tell me about it. I'm just saying.....

Are you the betting type?

Baby #2 is coming. Yep - that's what I feel like right now. Every night, usually between 7-10 pm, 'Ralph' get his/her groove on. It's a pretty cool science fiction looking phenomenon. You don't even have to have your hand on the belly anymore. You can just SEE it.

Yeah. Great.

And the bladder shots are AWESOME. I like it every year, but this year, especially, I'm REALLY happy. For the first time in years we are not traveling, not having visitors, are not headed to two/three different houses for dinner or dessert... We're not going ANYwhere! I *LIKE* it!!

We had an early morning gift session and we're all eating lunch and getting ready for naps. How nice is that? After naps we might go for a walk. Maybe. Maybe not. Who cares?!

I hope you are all enjoying your holidays with loud chaotic family or a quiet time at home. Give you loved ones a hug, tell them - out loud - how much they mean to you and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

I made it!!

One reason for the lack of blogs the last month or so? The amount of things that have been going on in my life. BIG things:

(1) I planned a three day field trip for the entire 6th grade. Daytime - not overnight. 337 students. 17 teachers. 9 busses. School lunches. Money. Scholarships for kids who don't have the money. Dealing with kids who act like morons while ON the trip. Yes. It was thrilling. I talked to parents who were concerned their children would get Lyme Disease, concerned over the alligators we held (baby's about 1.5 feet long under MASSIVE supervision), a parent who's wheelchair bound son had not been able to go on the 5th grade trip because there was no lift bus.... Only 9 kids were suspended out of 337. Not bad. All teachers made it alive and, I think, are looking forward to net year.

(2) My daughter's 2nd birthday party. It was this past Saturday. After Day #1 of the field trip. Before Days #2-#3. 27 adults. 12 children under 3. 50 black and red balloons. It was at the park, so that meant transferring coolers of ice and drinks food platters, making sure we had trash bags, hand sanitizer, serving spoons, etc. Thank goodness for good friends who helped set/clean up and remember everything. Except birthday candles...

(3) Conference night. It was last Thursday. One day before the big field trip. Conference nights are probably the main reason I ended up in therapy after my first year of teaching. I LOATHE dealing with parents. I've never had major problems, but I'm always so worried they'll yell at me 'cause I'm teaching their child wrong. I didn't get yelled at this year, but the anxiety makes me feel like I'm going to puke.

(4) My team leader's mom is ill. My fearless team leader, Debby, has an elderly mom living in the area. Debby's mom has had a series of mini-strokes and then had a 'bigger' mini-stroke about 2 weeks ago. Because Debby is the closest to her mom, both geographically and emotionally, she's been out of school dealing with rehab facilities, long-term care places, medicare bills, etc. Since she is not in school, me and my other team members are left to deal with her students. We had to split them as equally as possible into our already crowded rooms, make sure we kept track of attendance since middle schoolers are known to skip classes if given the opportunity, provide work to these students and discipline them when needed. This went on for five days. Debby came back for Day #1 of our field trip but was unable to go on Days #2-#3 so we, again, had to split her students, discipline them, etc all while away from school. Yay. I am glad to report that Debby's mom is doing better now that she's in a more permanent facility that was mutually agreed on by her family. Cross your fingers!

There are more, less exciting things going on too. Like the process of getting my 2 year old into a 'big girl room' but first we have to clear out the office, rip out shelves, put up a closet organizer, move the guest furniture to the office, paint the old guest room, buy 'big girl' furniture, assemble it in room, move all the other 2 year old stuff, get the old baby stuff out of storage, clean baby stuff, put baby stuff in baby room.... All before the March 12th due date of 'Ralph'.

What's nice about right now though, is all of these things (except for the big girl room) are done. Never to be done again - this year. Except for conference night, but the next one isn't until February. These few days that we have off fro school are pretty nice. I'm not stressing about much right now. Kinda nice.

Am I a follower?

My family members have vowed, or half-vowed, or are trying to blog every day. The University of South Florida is having their homecoming festivities this weekend! Pete and I are attending the football game tomorrow and to get into the spirit, I went shopping. I'm also about 4.5 months pregnant. Problem? YES!! The pain stabs me right in the butt. Yeah - right THERE! And the doctor I saw said the only thing I can do is wait it out. Oh, and take two REGULAR strength Tylenol every SIX hours. I'm all for the good drugs. A good muscle relaxer, Novocain, vicodin when prescribed, etc. Well, those are all out. =( She did mention getting a prenatal massage which I figured couldn't hurt. I got one and LOVED every minute. The next problem? The masseuse was so good she 'worked out' the nerve problem leaving my butt with a HUGE purple/yellow/green bruise! I'll take the bruise pain over the sciatic pain, but geez! Couldn't I just NOT be in pain at all? Just an idea...

On a much happier note - I do have to say I'm looking awfully cute in my maternity wear. I'm pooking out nicely even though I am only 4.5 months. I guess it's normal for B2 to pook out earlier, but wow! I'm pooking, baby. I'm pooking!

And, if one more person asks me if we're going to find out if it's a boy or a girl, I'm going to cry. Or scream. Or both. There's apparently a movie coming out soon, so if you're going to jump on the bandwagon, you might as well jump now. And the paperbacks are $8.99 at Target. How can you beat that? If you'd rather not read a downer blog, that's ok with me.

Since I found out I was pregnant, the tiredness has hit me hard. The first time around I was able to crash on the couch whenever I felt like it and then schlep up to bed at a later time. Not so much this time! An active toddler doesn't like it when mommy's laying on the couch. She'd much rather play and run and sing and dance and jump and repeat. So, I'm in bed these days MUCH earlier than usual trying to catch up on sleep.

To continue the comparison, my first pregnancy was really great. I wasn't sick. At all. For one day. I didn't have morning sickness, headaches, body aches, or even a runny nose. Well, you name it, I've got it. My current ailment is a runny nose and stuffy sinuses. And since the good drugs are off the market, I have to grin and bare it. Oh, and I'm still required to play and run and sing and dance and jump and repeat.

All this with school starting next Monday. Hooray.

It's really hard to type sarcasm.....

Um.... I like them online, in person, even with a telemarketer. So, I saw this on my cousin's blog I knew I'd be cutting and pasting... Here ya go:

20 Years!

20 Years Ago:
1. I was 11 years old and in my own personal hell at Plattsburgh Middle School.
2. I got glasses and braces in one week.
3. I think my cat Pansy died that year. She was a great kitty!
4. I was obsessed with New Kids on the Block. (Still am - I'm headed to their concert in November!!)
5. My best friend was named Bambi. Really.

10 Years Ago:
1. I was a college dropout from SUNY Oswego.
2. I was falling head over heels for this guy named Pete.
3. I got my first job as a bank teller.
4. I got Pete a cat for a housewarming gift. He named her Jiggy.
5. I was BROKE.

5 Years Ago:
1. I graduated from the University of South Florida! Yay!
2. I got my first new car - a 2003 VW Jetta.
3. I got my first teaching job - 5th grade at Schmidt Elementary. It put me into therapy.
4. I got engaged to this great guy named Pete.
5. It was awesome!

1 Year Ago:
1. I was in my sister's wedding as her maid of honor. She looked beautiful!
2. I held my baby as she came out of anesthesia after having tubes put in her ears.
3. I went back to work after my extended maternity leave.
4. Yeah - so did I! Kyrin will be 19 months old this weekend and we've already had numerous, full-blown, kicking, screaming, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO tantrums. Yay.

The most recent was during a really fun class that I signed us up for at My Gym. This place is SO cool. It's basically an indoor playground with mats, trampolines, a ball pit, etc. It's all sized and geared for kids 5 and under. Our first day was Wednesday. Kyrin was overwhelmed by how fun it was! When it was time to sit in a circle with me and the other Desperate Housewives moms (more about that in a minute) she went ballistic. I was THAT mom. The dirty looks I got was a shock. I had anticipated Kyrin's mood, but lay off me ladies!

Of course, we were the 'black sheep' of this crowd. If you haven't visited, we live in a very Desperate Housewives area. I've been given strange looks when I mention that I work full time AND have a child. So, it was a Wednesday morning - prime time Soccer Mom Central. Most moms there, about 15 of them, were dressed to the nines. Cute khaki capris, hair quaffed, makeup done, no stains. Their children were just a spotless. Obviously ironed clothes, no stains, hair bows and curls perfectly in place. Then there was us. I was in a t-shirt that had a hole in the shoulder, I hadn't showered yet that day (it was only 9 am...) hair in a pony tail. Kyrin was in her finest bargain-bin t-shirt and shorts complete with a permanent juice stain on the collar. Her already hard-to-tame hair was particularly crazy after having syrup on her waffles and creating her own toddler-hawk. Needless to say, they skipped right over us in the corner (while I restrained Kyrin) while going around for introductions.

Even though we were the outcasts of this cult, I signed us up. Kyrin had SO much fun climbing, swinging and running. She slept for the longest nap EVER and since we get unlimited classes, I'll be taking full advantage of these sleep times!

Tag - I'm it

Okay, so I've been tagged by my mom. This is the first time I've been so honored, probably because only about 5 people know I have this site! And I looked at my cousin's blog, who was the one who tagged Mom, and I can't tell if it's supposed to be facts about ME or just random facts. So, I think I'll do a combination of both. Anyway, here are seven weird or random facts:

One - I have some of the worst vision of anyone I know. My contact lens prescription reads -4.75 and -5.00. One website I looked at said that anything over about a 2.00 is considered legally blind. Um, yeah, that would make me about twice the legally blind limit. I literally need to hold the alarm clock so that it touches my nose if I don't have my contacts in or glasses on. It's really fun when I'm trying to find a lost pacifier at 3 am for my daughter.

Two - I am one of the most insecure people I know. I exude confidence but, I swear, it's a cover-up. I figure if I LOOK confident people will think I actually AM confident. I was a team leader for a while at one of the schools I worked for. I was given the job because the previous team leader was extremely 'dysfunctional' and I was the one to fix the broken. I had to be a leader for a year to a team that didn't like me and let me know. I survived, but only with the help of my therapist and the local spa. I would almost throw up before every team meeting that I had to hold. I made it. And I'll never do it again.

Three - Rubbing a combination of Maalox (the antacid), Aquaphor (the skin cream), and Neosporin (the antibacterial stuff) on diaper rash cures it in one night. The combo of medicines neutralizes acid, soothes bumpy, ouchie skin and keeps things from getting infected. Seriously. Try it. Not on yourself, silly. On your little one's behind!

Four - I want to write a book on the realities of mommy-hood. Really. I enjoy making things funny and I've had people ask me to tell the same baby stories over again. How my husband caught my daughter peeing on the floor so thought it'd be a great idea to take her into our bathroom and get a towel. Then my daughter slips and falls in her own pee and is having a blast rolling around in it. So he puts her in our tub to contain her while he cleans up pee-pee all while I'm trying to call from work. Or how silicone pacifiers bounce into the next universe and every parent must, by law, have at least 41 of these on hand at all times. Oh - but if you leave them behind the couch too long, they mate and multiply. I could go on. See me in 10 years when my book comes out. I'll send you an advance copy.

Five - My cat, Jiggy, is the meanest thing in the feline world and she sleeps on my chest every night - and purrs. She has attacked many friends, biting them on the ankles and drawing blood, chasing them down the hall, once even out of the apartment and she freezes people in their tracks with a growl. She's got a HUGE red marker "CAUTION - BITES" on her folder at the vet and has to be put to sleep to do just about anything. She's terrible. And I love her to death. She curls up on me and doesn't mind when I kick her off the bed. She just jumps back up and finds her new spot. She brings me her toys and leaves me 'gifts' of toys in my shoes almost every morning. I like her. I just wish she was nicer to the people I love.

Six - I'm addicted, quite literally, to a game called Text Twirl on Facebook. It gives you six letters and you have two minutes to create as many 3-6 letter words as possible. The only way to advance to the next level to use all 6 letters to create a word. It's great. Who knew that 'r a v d e c' (craved) could create 31 other possible words. Try it. You'll like it.

Seven - I'm a closet reggaeton music fan. I could seriously marry Sean Paul or Daddy Yankee. They're speaking a language I don't know anything about and I really, really like it. Maybe that's why I like it. I had little exposure to any music other than straight pop growing up. This has such a different feel, a different beat. I had the BEST time in Jamaica listening to some local bands play a similar style of music. I feel silly when I've forgotten to turn down my stereo as I pull in to a gas station. People must have to pick their jaws up off the ground when I, little white-girl, get out of my car with the bass thumping. I could blow speakers if you let me.

And now to complete my tagging assignment, I'm tagging my friendsDana and Dawn. I don't really know if they'll do this, but I hope they do.

1. On your post, link back to the person who tagged you - that would be me, in this case.
2. Post your assignment on your blog - seven weird or random facts.
3. Post these rules on your blog.
4. Post links to the bloggers that you will be tagging.
5. Go to those blogs and give them a comment on their blog to let them know that you have tagged them.

Kyrin Dancing

We watch enough Go, Diego, Go! and Dora the Explorer in this house that the cats know the words. It has gone SO fast! Of course, when she was three months old, and STILL waking up every two hours to eat, I couldn't imagine that she'd ever be old enough to laugh, sit up, crawl or walk. She's doing ALL of those things! Well, *almost* walking...

After Kyrin was born, daddy Pedro made a movie of the pictures and video clips that were taken while at the hospital. I still watch it about 3-4 times a month. And every time I get teary eyed.

I'm pretty dang thankful.

Click here to see my favorite movie of Kyrin.

Work update

Today Duncan was suspended for three days for an unrelated incident. Damn. Recovering from three days of missed school will really hurt this kid. There was some scuffle on the bus (where he's bussed almost 1 hour to come to our school) and he and another student were both suspended. ARGH!

I did learn an interesting fact about Duncan today which might explain his highs and lows. Duncan is SLD (specifically learning disabled) and spent ALL of elementary school in a 'special ed' type classroom designed for students with his disabilities. This year, since his teachers saw such great things last year, he's in a regular ed room for the whole day. I'm thinking that the daily grind of a 6th grade life is wearing on him. Changing classes five times a day, different teachers and rules in each classroom, keeping all earthly possessions in a locker down the hall, etc.

My team is speaking to the administration tomorrow about Duncan's suspension. We would LOVE for him to serve IN-school suspension rather than out. He could at least be at school, working, rather than at home, on 'punishment' from his mom and NOT doing any school work. We'll see how it goes....

Sometimes I really hate my job

Today was one of the most frustrating days I've had in a long time. Just a quick reminder - I teach 6th grade math. I'm already earning my spot in heaven for that.... My team of teachers is wonderful and we all teach the same students. We have all chosen one student, Duncan, as our 'project'. This is a kid from a rough background and has to really struggle for the C's he gets. But he really cares about his future. He knows that if he stays on the right track, college is in his future. He also knows that community college graduates can make more money than a high school graduate and a four year degree makes more than....well, you know the pay scale. So, Duncan has been working really well lately. I proudly have him a B- on his report card for the last nine weeks.

About three weeks ago, while grading an assignment, I noticed that three papers looked VERY similar. And, upon closer inspection, not only did they have all the same answers, they had the same mistakes. Three papers mysteriously had the word America spelled Anerica. An honest mistake, I'm sure, but for all THREE students? Hmmm. Well, after some stern discussion, yes, they had cheated off one another. Duncan was one of these students and he looked like he was going to cry when I told him of my disappointment. Again - he's a good kid who gets caught up in bad stuff....a lot.

So today, I noticed another student, Justin, who happens to sit right in front of me (there are reasons for that) looking into his lap repeatedly. This was while I was reminding students to turn in their homework assignment. Yep - he was cheating. And - - he was using Duncan's paper. I felt like I had been hit in the stomach. After our whole discussion on cheating, here was Duncan allowing Justin to use his paper. I sent both students to time out in other classrooms after loudly taking both papers, crumpling them up and throwing them away. My class knows the rule - both students get zeros. Well, Duncan was well aware of my total disgust for his actions. He was embarrassed and ashamed and it showed. He left my room with his head hung and didn't utter a word. However, he never made it to time out. He was walking the halls.... My time-out teacher and I gave him numerous chances to do what was asked, but he refused. So the principal was called and she came to escort him to the office.

I just felt my hard work walk to the office with this kid. Now he'll be suspended for at least one day for the willful disobedience and maybe another day for the cheating. ARGH! The discipline needs to take place, and I'm not questioning that. I'm questioning my time and effort spent. Duncan and I were really getting somewhere. Hopefully this is only a slight detour, but, ARGH!!!!!

Thanksgiving break cannot come fast enough. I'm burnt out and my students aren't far behind. I need that turkey feeling - pronto.

The pumpkin parking lot

Since there are no 'real' pumpkin patches in our area of FL, they set up pumpkin areas in parking lots of grocery stores, churches, etc. They make it look as authentic as they can - I guess. I cried in the car as I drove away. I totally love this place, but she's never been with 'strangers' longer than a few hours. She was there from 7:30 until 5. The ladies said she did fine. What are they going to say? "You're child is the spawn of the devil. You need to find new placement." Yeah right.

My students come back to school next Monday. This week is full of meetings, working in my classroom and MORE meetings. Our open house is Wednesday and Thursday. Two days to accommodate all the people. Great. Open houses, conference nights and report card days give me panic attacks. I don't sleep well, I don't eat well, all sorts of fun.

Oh, and I'm sick. What a terrific way to start back to work!

Kyrin's Groove

When daddy Pedro gets bored, he makes videos.

Click here to see Kyrin Goove

A Kid Song for Adults

Ok - this is hysterical. We thought it was coming, but with communication limited to crying, screaming, hitting, squirming and growling, it was difficult to tell. Yesterday she wanted to suck on my finger and I was able to feel the sharp edge of a bottom tooth. No wonder she's been such a fuss! That baby is SHARP! As soon as I can see it, I'll get a real picture. Thank goodness there is a payoff for all this 'teething' stuff. I made a terrific frittata tonight from the recipe above. I got the recipe directly from the WW site. I'd like you to notice direction #2 - - combine eggs and next four ingredients. Please now refer to the ingredient list. Ok - - does that mean the four ingredients after the first two egg whites or after the four eggs?? I figured it meant the four after the four eggs. But then, in step 4, it wants you to sprinkle it with cheese. What cheese?!?!?! I already used the cheese! I also had issues with the cook time. But that could be my crappy stove's fault. Another post....

It tasted great and FYI you get a huge portion for only 6 points. Pretty tasty for all the dinking around.

What a joke

I LOVE the Weight Watcher's program. The ice cream bars and english muffins are just as god as regular ones.

My problem? The lemon cake. It's very tasty!! But - honestly - you get a cake the size of a snack sized candy bar. Yeah - those ones you get for Halloween?? What good is a lemon cake - that is so tasty - if you only get one bite?? I know, I know - that's the point of Weight Watchers. But seriously...one bite?
